A sister of our community, Natou Sakombe, was detained this week in Benin. Her detention appears connected to the political fallout following the reported attempted coup earlier this month and the subsequent pursuit of Kemi Séba (Natou’s ex-husband), who publicly expressed support for the coup and is now reportedly being sought.

Natou is a mother, daughter, sister, educator, and servant of her community. Regardless of anyone’s political position, no mother should be detained as leverage in a power struggle she is not alleged to have led. We are deeply concerned for her safety and wellbeing, and we are mobilizing for her immediate release unharmed.
